Xiangyu Dongshe — Global Demonstration Village for Everyday TCM Living and the First TCM Lifestyle Festival Grandly Held in Shanghai, China

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) carries the wisdom of thousands of years of Chinese civilization. To further integrate TCM into everyday life—into clothing, food, housing, and travel—and to bring this ancient knowledge into rural homes, the “Xiangyu Dongshe” Global Demonstration Village for Everyday TCM Living and the First TCM Lifestyle Festival was grandly launched on August 19 at “Mashan Xiangyu Dongshe Village.”

At the opening ceremony, Chen Yingchun, Secretary of the Party Branch and Director of the Village Committee of Dongshe Village, extended a warm welcome and sincere gratitude on behalf of the village committee and all villagers to experts, scholars, medical professionals, and entrepreneurs who traveled from afar. Gao Feng, Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor of Liantang Town, stated in his speech that TCM wisdom, when deeply rooted in rural cultural tourism, can revitalize the countryside with new vitality. It represents an innovative path that integrates culture and health into rural revitalization. Bai Junyi, CEO and founder of Mashan Xiangyu, shared the development plan for the TCM Lifestyle Demonstration Village in Dongshe, and introduced Xiangyu’s vision of creating an elegant countryside health and wellness destination centered on “TCM wellness, healing therapies, outdoor activities, and arts & culture.”

During the opening ceremony, the plaque unveiling for “Gu Shizhe TCM Heritage Studio,” founded by Professor Gu Shizhe—National Master Physician and professor at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine—was held. In his remarks, Professor Gu expressed heartfelt expectations for TCM heritage to take root in Dongshe Village and truly become part of ordinary people’s daily lives. The ceremony also marked the official launch of the “Shanghai Dongshe TCM Lifestyle Demonstration Village & National Master Physician Rural Workstation,” as well as the donation of a “Bronze Acupuncture Figure.” These were inaugurated jointly by Zhang Shaopeng, Deputy Director of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies’ Acupuncture Exchange Center and founder of the Lao Shuo TCM Lifestyle Platform, Gao Feng, Professor Gu Shizhe, and Xiangyu founder Bai Junyi.

Following the launch ceremony, the highly meaningful “Fourth Apprentice Ceremony for Professor Gu Shizhe’s Academic Successors” was held. A select group of young and mid-career medical practitioners were formally accepted as disciples through traditional rites. After the ceremony, Professor Gu encouraged his new students:

“TCM inheritance is the foundation for the continued development of our discipline. I hope you will not only delve deeply into classical medical texts but also promote the core concept of ‘Everyday TCM Living’ and bring practical skills into primary healthcare, benefiting the people.”

After the ceremony, the new disciples assisted Professor Gu in providing free medical consultations for villagers and visitors.

The First TCM Lifestyle Festival runs from August 19 to August 31. During the festival, activities include Tai Chi Zen Ball, the 24 Solar Terms Concert, exhibitions of rare TCM artifacts and ancient medical documents, free consultations with renowned physicians, TCM herbal decoctions, medicinal cuisine ingredients, and interactive experiences with innovative TCM technology products. During the opening festival, a “TCM Lifestyle Demonstration Village Co-Creation Forum” was held, featuring National Master Physician Professor Gu Shizhe; Ma Dingqiang, senior professor at the Guangxi Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center; Zhang Shaopeng, Deputy Director of the Acupuncture Exchange Center; Dr. Chang Haipu from Huadong Hospital; Shangguan Wanping, Director of the Shanghai Medical Museum; and Xiangyu founder Bai Junyi. Together, they discussed in depth the integrated development path of TCM cultural heritage and rural revitalization, centered on the value theme of “TCM + Lifestyle + Countryside,” exploring ways to transform TCM theory into tangible, participatory, and sustainable lifestyle practices.

The “TCM Lifestyle Demonstration Village,” personally guided and developed by Professor Gu Shizhe—renowned professor at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and National Master Physician—marks the first comprehensive implementation of his uniquely developed “Everyday TCM Living” theoretical system and practical approach within a rural environment. It is hoped that the inheritance and innovation of TCM culture will gain fresh, vigorous momentum on the fertile ground of rural revitalization.
