The Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) 2025 pre-conference workshop, Oncology Acupuncture 101: Guideline-Based Foundations & Safety Strategies, took place at Harvard Medical School’s Joseph B. Martin Conference Center, bringing together over 93 participants from nine countries.

Led by Dr. Weidong Lu of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School, the workshop marked ten years since the inaugural SIO Oncology Acupuncture training in 2015. Faculty from leading institutions including the National Cancer Institute (Dr. Libin Jia), NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center (Dr. Iris Zhi), Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Dr. Susan Veleber), and Tel Aviv Integrative Oncology Center (Dr. Yair Maimon)

joined Dana-Farber’s acupuncture team to deliver evidence-based and practical education.

The workshop emphasized safety and clinical precision through the Red/Amber/Green safety triage algorithm, guideline-directed indications, and two validated treatment protocols:

  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) – Electroacupuncture protocol
  • Aromatase-inhibitor-related joint pain (AI arthralgia) – Manual acupuncture protocol

Dr. Lu stated, “This workshop shows how far oncology acupuncture has evolved — from a single-center effort to a globally shared clinical discipline. The next decade will focus on standardized training, safety, and access for patients who need it most.”

Dana-Farber plans to build on this momentum by launching Oncology Acupuncture 102 (Advanced Training), pursuing NIH R25/T32 education grants, and expanding international collaboration and open-access dissemination via Zenodo and SIO platforms.
